Welcome
I’m Katie - a transportation planner working in the public sector. I have a background in environmental education and sustainable and resilient community development. I currently work for the Washington State Department of Transportation’s Northwest Region Mount Baker Area, serving communities in Whatcom, Skagit, and Island counties.
This blog showcases some of the spatial analysis and data visualization projects I have developed during my time working in public transportation planning agencies.
Highlights
SR 542 Deming Community Survey: Data Collection and O-D Routing Pilot
In July and August 2022, I piloted the first public ArcGIS Survey 123 survey at WSDOT. Generally speaking, planning studies in the Northwest Region tend to utilize SurveyMonkey or other similar web platforms without the ability to collect spatial data - unless consultants or partners provide access to more sophisticated tools.
WSDOT Portal - Mount Baker Area Planning & Engineering Services GIS Hub
Since I began working in the WSDOT Mount Baker Area, I have developed an ArcGIS Online Site to act as a GIS hub for our planning & engineering services team. This page serves as a landing platform to share GIS products, namely interactive web apps developed for specific project or planning needs.
Skagit 2045 Public Engagement
In 2020, Skagit Council of Governments began the update process for the Skagit 2040 Regional Transportation Plan. The new plan, entitled Skagit 2045, necessitated public outreach and involvement to understand community preferences and needs for regional transportation improvements. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SCOG planning staff identified a need to transition public involvement for the plan update to an online format.
Infographics
For some time, the Skagit Council of Governments’ (SCOG) Transportation Policy Board had questions around how populations were flowing in and out of Skagit County, WA. The Skagitonians on the Move infographic was produced for SCOG in 2018 and sought to educate the Policy Board and stakeholders around in- and out-migration in the Skagit County area.
I-5 Operations & Demand Management Analysis - Public Survey
In October 2021, WSDOT worked in partnership with the Whatcom Council of Governments to engage the Whatcom County community in understanding transportation challenges and preferred strategies to address congestion and safety issues on the I-5 mainline in Whatcom County. Around 700 survey responses were received through the MetroQuest platform as part of this outreach effort.
